Several nice articles over at The Pilot Online:
- ‘Good-bye, Duck-In’ is pre-last weekend info
- ‘The Duck-In ducks out’ is post-last weekend recap
- The Guestbook on the Pilot site has lots of good Duck-In stories
- ‘Where’s the party after the Duck-In closes?’ brings up exactly what is the topic of this site
Duck-In is closing, but not ’till they say last call! The last party was all it should have been. The crowd was large (not as large as Friday, but we had more boats!), the beer was plentiful, and Mike Proffitt was back again to take Ducky out in style. The weather was great all weekend, and we got lots of pictures and movies to remember it by (including the last song ever played at a Duck-In Beach Party).
I imagine that either Duck-In didn’t plan on the largest crowd ever (that I’d seen), or it just didn’t matter… but with only two beach parties left until the end of Duck-In; the crowed started to dissipate due to NO MORE BEER. Those of us who remained until The Mike Proffitt Band ended the night stayed for the people, the view, or the remaining liquor bar
. We’re going back Sunday for the final showdown.
Upon learning a year ago that Duck-In would indeed be flattened to make way for condos, my wife and I went into denial. When summer of 2005 hit, we realized that Duck-In didn’t have a replacement for its beach parties. Then The Virginian Pilot did a bit about Duck-In closing, and went so far as to suggest alternatives. We decided to create this site to live on past the Duck-In web page and the Pilot articles. To serve both as a memory of how wonderful Duck-In was, and as a place to help cultivate a new ‘large scale’ venue for something unique to Virginia Beach in the Hampton Roads area…. The Beach Party.
